At Big Island Farms we take composting seriously. We only use organic matter from our sustainable farm to build our Aina (land) Gold compost.
This extremely rich compost is made mainly from Cane grass & Guinea grass cuttings which are then combined with our own sustainably grown macadamia nut husk, sprinkled with goat manure (which we allow to season over a full year before blending it into our compost mix), and topped with freshly cut wood chips harvested from our forest.
Our compost is then covered and allowed to cook at around 150 to 160 Fahrenheit under the Hawaiian sun. Compost is periodically mixed to stimulate the oxidative decomposition and the process is repeated until we obtain a healthy biota thriving with beneficial bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes.
This compost is 100% regenerative and sustainable and is what we use to grow all our food on our 64-acre organic farm. If a farmer lives by it, then you know it’s good.
Compost improves soil structure, provides a wide range of nutrients for plants, and adds beneficial microbes to the soil. Made in according to the National Organic Program (TAT) standards. Our compost is certified by the Soil Food Lab.
*For our local community, we can certify that our compost is free from red ants.
* We are not a certified organic farm, but we can provide our soil test analysis to prove that we have never used any pesticide or non-organic matter on our 64-acre farm for over 25 years.
